Back in 1986, Lucasfilm and Universal thought that it would be a good idea to bring an anthropomorphic duck named Howard to screen in live-action glory. He’s a private eye! He talks! He carries condoms made for ducks! Somehow, the powers that be thought there was a recipe for success here... and boy were they right. HOWARD THE DUCK is typically regarded as a flop and a completely misguided attempt at giving us a talking duck movie. But it’s bigger than that. HOWARD THE DUCK straddles the line between careful adaptation and a re-imagining of a property as something decidedly different (and perhaps much more adult) than its source material would suggest. It’s not every day that you get a studio-produced comic book movie from the director of MESSIAH OF EVIL, the creator of STAR WARS and features a cigar chomping duck who thinks he’s Sam Spade and has a lust for human women. Cherish it. It’ll never happen again.
