Open Ears Concerts Presents: Austin Community Steelband
Austin Community Steelband (ACS) is a non-profit professional steelpan school founded in 2003. ACS teaches students to play and perform on this unique instrument. In doing so, ACS provides developmental opportunities that help disadvantaged students use their intelligence and talent to make positive choices. ACS eliminates economic and social barriers by providing free transportation to access free classes with instruments. As kids learn to play and perform, they develop both mental and social skills. ACS’ professional teaching staff and advisors are from Trinidad, the birthplace of steelpan. They gained their expertise growing up within Trinidad’s large steel orchestras and have become some of the world’s finest musicians. They provide our students with personal interaction and steelpan experience rarely found outside Trinidad. ACS will perform one song during the 10:45 AM service, and a full show featuring both instructors and students at 1 PM. A potluck lunch will be available between Noon and 1 PM. $15 suggested donation, but no one will be turned away. Open Ears Concerts is a monthly non-profit concert series that explores the intersection of Art, Spirituality, and Activism. We present diverse genres and styles of music in an alcohol free, family friendly, listening room environment.
