Dear Community Partner,
On January 17, 2012 my life was turned upside when my only sister, Micki, suffered a rare and fatal birth complication days before giving birth to my nephew. Sadly, my nephew Mason also did not survive. Micki suffered an amniotic fluid embolism or AFE.
AFE occurs 1 in 40,000 births and currently is unpreventable and unpredictable. AFE is characterized by acute and rapid collapse of mother and/or baby as a result of an allergic-like reaction to amniotic fluid entering the maternal circulatory system.
Micki’s passing had a tremendous and profound impact on many. Her husband became a widower and her daughter motherless. My parents buried her oldest child, my brother and I lost our big sister, and many friends lost the life of the party. I know firsthand the life-changing effects and unforgiving grief associated with losing a loved one to AFE. That is why my family and friends decided to create the Micki & Mason Memorial Washer Tournament and Crawfish Boil with 100% of proceeds benefitting the AFE Foundation whose mission is to fund research, raise public awareness and provide support for families affected by AFE.
The 3rd Annual Micki & Mason Memorial Washer Tournament will be held May 13, 2017 at The Red Rooster’s in Pflugerville. The day will feature a washer tournament, raffle, silent auction, karaoke and crawfish boil. We invite you to join us as a sponsor to help serve as a vehicle to raise funds towards our goal of raising $10,000.00. We have raised over $15,000.00 in the last two years and can’t wait to contribute more.
The AFE Foundation has joined into a formal collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas to create the first of its kind, AFE Patient Registry. This registry will allow for greater visibility into incidence rates, survival rates and commonalities amongst those affected. Additionally, it will provide a comprehensive database that will be used as the basis for clinical research on AFE. Funds from this tournament will help ensure that this invaluable research continues.
I hope you will join me to support the AFE Foundation’s vision to better understand AFE and seek prevention, thus resulting in a noticeable reduction in maternal and fetal death globally. We will be in touch with you soon to follow up regarding this request.
